Natural Treats vs Not So Natural Treats
Peanut Butter & Bacon Oven Baked Biscuits, Naturally
Let me just begin by saying that because I love these two characters so much, aka Balsfar & Governor, I decided to make my own pup treats that are delicious, yet pure and healthy. The first recipe I have created is Peanut Butter & Bacon Oven Baked Biscuits.
Here are the ingredients: natural peanut butter, whole milk powder, dried apple, whole wheat flour, baking powder, rolled oats, real bacon bits, vitamin e oil, and ascorbic acid (vitamin c). All ingredients are human grade quality and naturally sourced in the USA. These treats are baked in small batches, vacuum sealed and flash frozen to keep them in their fresh natural state. 7 oz. or 14 oz. batches are packaged in heat sealed, resealable pouches once an order is placed. Fresh!
They Can't Read, But You Can!
So when you're cruising the dog treat aisles, or perusing options on the fantastic array of options virtually, you may one day, find yourself taking a closer look at the ingredients your pup will be happily ingesting. After all, they can't read. But you can. I don't know about you, but somehow dog treats that are imported from certain countries look highly suspect to me.
And how about these commonly used enhancers and preservatives like Ethoxyquin, Propylene glycol, BHA/BHT, TBHQ, and Sodium metabisulphite? Is it no wonder our pups end up at the clinic with health threatening symptoms that often can't be properly diagnosed?
What to Look For
When you do a little comparative dog treat shopping look for the presence of these ingredients: synthetic preservatives, filler ingredients, refined and artificial ingredients, and animal byproducts. Many of us believe these are harmful additives.
Synthetic Preservatives
Synthetic Preservatives: These preservatives are added to extend the shelf life of treats enabling your little bag of treats to stay on that shelf for months, or even years. Many are considered to be carcinogens, a health hazard to dogs. Some serious health issues that can be caused by synthetic preservatives may include liver damage, cancer, cell damage, and damage to the nervous system to name a few.
Filler Ingredients
Filler Ingredients: Cheap ingredients are used to ‘bulk up’ the treats as the manufacturer saves big bucks by substituting nutritious ingredients for cheap alternatives that provide no nutritional value. These fillers were never meant to be part of a dogs diet and can lead to serious health issues that may include bloating, food allergies, digestive problems, and diarrhea. Be on the look out for these very bad fillers used in dog treats and biscuits: soybean hulls and soybean meal, corn bran, corn gluten and modified corn starch, rice bran and rice hulls, cereal by-products, oat hulls, cottonseed hulls and peanut hulls.
Refined & Artificial Sugar
Refined and Artificial Sugar: Because dogs typically like sugar, refined and artificial sweeteners are often added to commercially made treats. But, not only is refined sugar unhealthy for dogs it can be addictive and can lead to obesity if left unchecked. Look for these ingredients and avoid them: corn syrup, fructose, and white sugar.
Animal Byproducts
Animal Byproducts: Where to begin? These byproducts are used to stretch the composition of the dog treat without adding any natural good quality to the product. Without going into detail, you probably would not want your pup ingesting some of the nasties that and considered animal byproducts, just use your imagination and go beyond that. These ingredients have no nutritional value and can be practically indigestible, leading to digestive issues at a minimum.
